Here is an overview of how the opening and closing ranks:
The opening and closing ranks for admissions to various institutes participating in the JoSAA counseling process vary each year based on several factors, including the number of applicants, difficulty of the entrance exam, and seat availability. These ranks are crucial as they determine the range of student ranks that a particular program or institute will accept.
Opening Rank
The opening rank is the rank of the first student who is admitted to a particular program at a specific institute. This rank indicates the highest-performing student (based on exam scores) who secured admission in that program.
Closing Rank
The closing rank is the rank of the last student who is admitted to a particular program at a specific institute. This rank signifies the lowest-performing student (based on exam scores) who secured admission in that program.
Factors Influencing Opening and Closing Ranks
1. Institute Reputation:Institutes with higher reputations (like older IITs and top NITs) generally have higher (better) opening and lower (worse) closing ranks.
2. Program Demand: Popular programs (like Computer Science and Engineering) usually have higher opening and lower closing ranks.
3. Category: Ranks vary significantly across different categories (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, etc.).
4. Seat Availability: The number of seats available in a particular program affects the closing rank.
5. Location:Institutes located in metropolitan or highly desirable locations often have higher opening and lower closing ranks.
